a tale of an OMBÚ from distant lands...
A Phytolacca dioica, known as the Ombú, is a vast, mythical evergreen of the South American Pampas—more plant than tree, yet grander than both. Fast-growing and without growth rings, its age can only be read through history. And history here runs deep.
Born beneath the vast skies of South America, the Ombú crossed the ocean as a rare and resilient wanderer. Drawn from one wind-swept coast to another, it found its destiny here in Morocco.
When Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah founded Mogador in the mid-18th century, this very Ombú was planted—a foreign guardian taking root at the city’s first breath. For more than 250 years, its powerful base and immense canopy have watched over this square, holding centuries of silence, memory, and shade.
Today, Ombu Restaurant & Café is built around this mythical being—an offering of protection and gratitude. And as we dine beneath its living presence, we share the company of a spirit that has stood here since the beginning of Essaouira itself.
